At the invitation from his best friend Harry Lime, American writer Holly Martins visits the postwar Vienna. What awaits him upon his arrival is the news of Harry's death. At his funeral, Major Calloway from British military forces tells him that Harry was a drug dealer and deserved his death. Intrigued by the suspicious circumstances surrounding Harry's death, Martins decides to investigate into the matter. He then finds that three men have been reported to witness his death. Martins can identify the two of them, and there remains this mysterious "third man."
