Bob Harris, a middle-aged Hollywood actor, is in Tokyo to shoot a TV commercial. Amid the confusion arising from cultural differences, he meets Charlotte, a young American woman whose photographer husband is on assignment in Japan. Their loneliness and sense of alienation bring them together in strange friendship bordering on tender passion. Together, they start exploring Tokyo.
