Where Mothers Breathe

Story

In Japan, 99% of births take place in hospitals, but there are still women who choose to give birth in midwifery centers or at home. Midwifery centers provide consistent support for mother and child throughout pregnancy, during and after childbirth, and into the early days of parenthood. Midwives attend regular checkups and spend time with expectant mothers, waiting to share the moment when a new life is born. This documentary chronicles the births of four women who have made the 1% choice, and the days of the midwives who support them.
