This is the third directorial effort by Kinuyo Tanaka, one of the greatest Japanese actresses of all time. Yumeji Tsukioka plays the role of Fumiko Nakajo, a leading waka poet of postwar Japan, who dies prematurely by breast cancer. With women writing and directing, this film provides a daring portrayal of the pains and desires of a woman who has lost her breasts by cancer.
