Actor and essayist Kaibe meets a young woman who says that her code name is Claudine. When he writes about the encounter in a travel magazine, a letter from “the real Claudine” is delivered to the editors’ office. Set in Shingu, Yoshino, Kumano, Naniwa, Miwa, and Mt. Nijo, the story unfolds around Shinobu Orikuchi’s “The Book of the Dead.”
