On the Mahawk Reservation in upstate New York, near the Canadian border, Ray is abandoned by her addictive, gambler husband a few days before Christmas. As a way out of poverty and impending homelessness for her and her two sons, she partners with a Mahawk single mother Lila in the shady business of smuggling illegal immigrants across the frozen St. Lawrence. Superbly written and directed by Courtney Hunt and outstandingly performed by the cast, “Frozen River” is grippingly suspenseful and powerfully introspective as a portrait of the working-poor in America today.
