Spurred by a friend’s snide remark about the stereotyped image of Japanese women suffering in silence, director Kyoko Gasha set out to create a film about their strength. She went around asking questions of Japanese women based in New York. Why did they choose to leave their native country and come to the United States? Do they feel guilty about their choice? The resulting documentary “Mothers’ Ways, Daughters’ Choice” is a universal and poignant story of women growing out of their shells, meeting the challenges, and coming to full bloom in their lives.
