Daigo, a cellist, loses his job with a symphony in Tokyo and decides to return to his hometown village with his wife Mika. Answering an ambiguously worded newspaper ad, Daigo becomes a nokanshi (encoffiner) who performs rites and rituals before placing the body into the coffin.
